Top 5 Waterfalls in Uganda

Uganda is known for its stunning natural beauty, and the country is home to several breathtaking waterfalls. Many people know Uganda mainly for gorilla trekking and visiting Uganda’s stunning waterfalls is one of the many ways you can relax in Uganda.

All the following waterfalls can be visited on a self-drive Uganda safari on an unlimited mileage basis. Opting for a limited mileage car rental might not work out well for you since some of these waterfalls are very far away from Kampala; the capital of Uganda. Here are the best five waterfalls in Uganda.

Murchison Falls

Located in Murchison Falls National Park, Murchison Falls is one of Uganda’s most famous and spectacular waterfalls. It is formed as the Nile River squeezes through a narrow gorge and plunges 43 meters (141 feet) down, creating a thunderous roar and a beautiful display of mist and rainbows.

In the evening, you can also watch an amazing sunset from the top of Murchison Falls. It is the most expensive waterfall due to its location inside Murchison falls national park which does not only require you to pay park entrance but also extra fees to visit the top of the falls.

Sipi Falls

Situated in the eastern part of Uganda near Mount Elgon, Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls that cascade down the slopes of the mountain. The falls offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, including lush green hills and coffee plantations.

It is still the most visited waterfall in Uganda. This is partly attributed to the fact that it is cheaper to visit Sipi Falls than it is to visit Murchison Falls. The community tours also add a special touch to exploring Sipi Falls in Eastern Uganda.

Ssezibwa Falls

Located in central Uganda, Ssezibwa Falls is a cultural and natural heritage site. The falls are considered sacred by the Baganda people and are believed to possess healing powers. Surrounded by lush vegetation, Ssezibwa Falls offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

It is the closest waterfall to Uganda’s capital Kampala. Many people visit the waterfall for purposes of prayer and meditation. But besides these; the views of the waterfall are in themselves spectacular. The journey through the tea plantations also adds a special touch to the Ssezibwa Falls experience.

Busowoko Waterfalls

These are the most scenic waterfalls around Jinja the adrenaline adventure capital of Uganda. Busowoko waterfalls are located near Haven Lodge in Jinja. They are the first major waterfalls for rafting besides the Itanda Falls punchline.

Many people often visit these waterfalls on weekends just like Sipi Falls. The atmosphere is quite welcoming. There are cultural dance performances on request. And last but not least; the waterfalls also have a sacred attachment to the Busoga kingdom.

Aruu Falls

Located in northern Uganda; Aruu falls are by far the most amazing waterfalls in Uganda. Unlike most of the waterfalls that can only be viewed, Aruu Falls offer opportunities for water massage as well as swimming.

Its cascading nature makes it very beautiful for viewing yet at the same time provides an unlimited opportunity to just busk in the fresh waters of Aruu Falls. Unlike the other waterfalls on the list; this is actually the least visited besides the fact that it is one of the most scenic.
