3 Door Rav4
The three door Rav4 is the cheapest offroad car available for self drive in Uganda. This is because it is relatively old making it easy to repair. In Uganda, there is still a huge challenge of repairing newer cars. It is hard to find a car rental agency renting out newer cars because they are often hard to repair.
The 3 door Rav4 is highly recommended for people who are travelling solo or as a couple. However most car rental agencies do not allow their cars to go to Kidepo valley national park. Therefore before you book this car, always ask the places where the car rental agencies do not hire out their cars for.
5 Door Rav4
The 5 door Rav4 is the second best budget car rental option in Uganda. Similar to the 3 door Rav4. It is not recommended for destinations such as Kidepo valley national park. This car is a full time four wheel drive car making it a good car for most of the destinations in Uganda.
Land Cruiser Prado TX/TZ
The Land cruiser Prado is the most popular land cruiser among self drive trips in Uganda. Its price varies according to the service provider, time of the year and several other specifications. In order to get a good Prado, always ask for its mileage. This car is suitable for camping with a rooftop tent and it can visit almost any place in Uganda.
Land Cruiser V8/VX
The Land cruiser V8 is the most reliable among all Land cruisers. It is also available with a rooftop. But it has one big challenge, it has the worst fuel consumption given its 4700cc petrol engine. If you intend to save on fuel, always ask for a Land cruiser VX which is the diesel option.
Land Cruiser Hard Top
The Land cruiser Hard top is common known as the classic land cruiser. It is often only available with a manual gear option. Some car rental agencies do not offer it for self drive. But if you are comfortable driving a manual car, this is one of the most recommended safari cars. However it is important to note that it is not as comfortable as the Land cruiser V8.
Toyota HiAce Safari Van
The Toyota Hiace is commonly known as a Drone in Uganda. It is the most recommended car for groups of 8 people to 10. It is quite spacious and comfortable yet having very good fuel economy. They often have a diesel engine making it cheaper than the gasoline fuel option. If you intend to have one which can seat more than 10 people, a special arrange has to be made since these are not very common.
It is also important to that this is the only car on the list that will require you to be in possession of a special class of driving license. If you have the first class of the driving license, you are likely not allowed to drive this car in Uganda. It is therefore recommended that before you opt for hiring this car on a self drive car rental basis; ensure that you have the right driving license.
