Just imagine that it is your first holiday, a long-awaited road trip, or a special getaway with someone you care about. Every detail has been planned meticulously for weeks, even months. You have saved money, requested time off work, compared different options of where to go, pinned down the accommodation, chosen the activities to do, and made travel arrangements.

You have even had fantasies about how the trip will go down and all the fun memories you will make. Every day that passes brings you closer to the day you have eagerly waited for. Then, finally, the day arrives. You take that flight, arrive at your destination, and collect your self-drive vehicle. Excitement fills the air, and the adventure you have been dreaming of finally begins.

But amid all this lies a simple truth: the trip you have spent months planning can be undone in just a few seconds. One impulsive decision, one “I didn’t think” moment, or one unnecessary risk can turn your dream trip into an experience you would rather forget. For this reason, you will realise that the journey deserves just as much care as the planning that set everything in motion.

Let us backtrack a little bit. You have been handed the keys to your self-drive car, and the contract has been signed. You did not look too much into the details of the agreement because, come on, what could go wrong now? The money has been paid, the briefing on the road rules is done, and all you want to do is hit the road and begin your adventure.

It is done, finally, and with all the confidence in the world, you hit the road and begin your trip. There is no stopping now.

You start the engine with a “world, here I come” mentality in your head. I mean, this is your dream trip. For the first few kilometres, everything is exactly as you imagined. There is the freedom of being behind the wheel, the beautiful scenery, the excitement of discovering new places and the satisfaction of knowing that all your planning was worth it.

Day one ends well. Day two begins strongly, and you and the road are now one.

Then comes a moment that seems insignificant. Perhaps you are driving a little faster than you should because the excitement blinds you. Maybe you glance at your phone for just a second, convinced that it will not hurt. Or perhaps you decide to over take another vehicle without giving it enough thought. Its one decision ,one moment, one unnecessary risk and boom, you are flying through the air.

You do your best to take control of the wheel, but in what seems like a split second, there you are at the side of the road or probably half way down a near by swamp.You hold your breath and then let it go. You are safe, and so is your companion. The only thing that has taken the hit is the car, and at this point, the trip as well.

Boom, boom goes your heart. “How did this happen?” you ask. “How did we end up here? Everything was going so well. How did I not see that ditch in the road?”

Well, the damage is now done, you tell yourself as you calm down. It is time for damage control.Luckily enough, some locals come to your rescue and help you drag the damaged car to a safe spot. You contact the self-drive company to report the incident and find out what help can be offered.

The assistance is provided quickly, but unfortunately for you, it involves extra costs, insurance payments for the damage to the car, as well as an unplanned stopover while waiting for the replacement vehicle. To add icing to the cake, you are no longer allowed to drive yourself. A driver is now provided because you cannot be trusted with the next car.

What a way to ruin such a fun trip and experience.

There are no options, though. It is either you accept this arrangement or let go of the entire trip you had planned so meticulously for months.

The saddest part in all this is not the damaged vehicle or the unexpected costs. Those can eventually be repaired or repaid. The real cost is the experience you can never get back.

The excitement of driving yourself through places you have never seen before, stopping wherever you wanted, taking photos at your own pace, and sharing those special moments with the loved ones you travelled with has now been replaced with stress, paperwork, insurance claims and regret.

Drive carefully and stay within the speed limits. Respect the road and keep your eyes focused on it, even when it seems empty and you think you have everything under control. If you are unsure of a route, ask someone who knows it. Lastly, never let excitement convince you that the rules do not apply to you.

After all, arriving safely is not what ruins an adventure. It is one careless move, one moment of a lapse in judgement. It took you months to plan the trip. Do not let one careless moment write the ending.
