Uganda is one of the safari destinations in Africa that is picking traction. Among the most popular safari options is rooftop tent camping. There are several forms of rooftop tent camping in Uganda ranging from budget to the most luxurious options. The budget option are simply off road cars or Uganda 4×4 cars that have a rooftop tent hatched on the top. Among the budget rooftop tent car options include the following:
Land Cruiser Prado with a rooftop tent
This is usually the Land cruiser Prado 90 series. It is also commonly referred to as the Land cruiser TX or Land cruiser TZ. This car exists in three different types in terms of engine. The appearance might look the same but the performance always differs. The first option which is also the most reliable is the V6 Land cruiser Prado commonly referred to as the Land cruiser TZ.
The Land cruiser TZ has a 3400cc petrol engine making it a very none economical car for your trip. But besides the economy of the car, it is a very reliable engine and very strong to take you through almost each and every part of the remote area in Uganda. Currently some car rental agencies do not allow these cars to go to Kidepo Valley national park and Serengeti national park in Tanzania.
The second best option is the Land cruiser TX 3000cc diesel engine. This is the most economical of all the Land cruiser Prado 90 series. It is not as strong as the Land cruiser TZ but strong enough to get you in and out most of the remote areas in Uganda.
The Land version of the Land cruiser Prado 90 series is the Land cruiser Prado TX 2700cc engine. This might seem like it has the smallest engine among all these land cruisers but that should not fool you to think that it is the most economical of all. In fact if this car is old, which obviously is; it will consume more fuel than the Land cruiser TZ. The acceleration of this car is also not good compared to the Land cruiser TZ.
If you are a group of three or three families renting 3 Prados with rooftop tents in Uganda, you will find that the Land cruiser TZ is the most efficient of all these vehicles while the Land cruiser TX petrol version is the least efficient. In fact you will sometimes have trouble overtaking in case you are driving the Land cruiser Prado 2700cc.
Besides the engines, there is one extra thing that often differentiate the cars. The car will either have a sunroof or not. If you hire a car with a rooftop in Uganda, you would have to specify whether you are going for a car with a sunroof or not. Hiring a car with a sunroof makes it possible for you to have a good game view regardless of having a rooftop tent on top of the car. If you hire a car with a rooftop tent but without a sunroof, chances are high that you will take all your safari photos through the windows.
With that said, all these cars can be fitted with similar rooftop tents. However you can still specify on whether you are interested in a car with a soft shell rooftop tent or a hard shell rooftop tent. Hard shell rooftop tents are often easier to set up when compared to other types of rooftop tents.
